Nigerian Ports Authority is the Federal Government Agency that governs and operates the seaports in Nigeria.

The major seaports in Nigeria includes the following:

1 Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays), Lagos , Lagos State

2 Tin Can Island Port Complex, Lagos, Lagos State

3 Calabar Port Complex, Calabar, Cross River State

4 Rivers Port Complex, Rivers State

5 Onne Port Complex, Rivers State

6 Delta Port, Delta State

 

In order for the seaports in Nigeria to achieve their goals and objectives, there are lines of authority and accountability in place. The Nigerian Ports Authority supervises the seaports in Nigeria while the Federal Ministry of Transport supervises the Nigerian Ports Authority.

 

Also, the Nigerian Ports Authority collaborates with other Government Agencies to optimize its operations and deliver efficient port services in a safe, secured, and customer friendly environment.

 

We shall take a look at each of the seaports in Nigeria as follows:

 

1) Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays)

This is the largest of the seaports in Nigeria and it is situated in Apapa, Lagos State, the commercial center of Nigeria.  Apapa port is well equipped with modern cargo handling equipment and has five(5) private terminals. The terminal operators are as follows:

– AP Moller Terminal Limited (APMT)

– ENL Consortium Limited (ENL)

-Apapa Bulk Terminal Limited (ABTL)

-Greenview Development Nigeria Limited (GDNL)

– Lilypond Inland Container Terminal

In addition, Apapa port has two(2) logistics bases – Eko Support Services Limited and Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics (LADOL) and eight(8) jetties.

 

 

2) Tin Can Island Port Complex, Lagos, Lagos State

Tin Can Island Port is located at Tin Can Island close to Apapa port and it is very significant among the seaports in Nigeria. The port has five(5) terminals and the terminal operators are as follows:

 

. Josephdam Port Services Limited

. Tin Can Island Container Limited

. Port & Cargo Handling Services Limited

. Five Star Logistics Limited

. Port & Terminal Multi-Services Limited (PTML)

 

3) Calabar Port Complex

The Calabar Port Complex is equally one of the seaports in Nigeria. It comprises of the Old Port, the New Port, and the Dockyard.

 

Calabar Port Complex has jurisdiction over Crude Oil Terminal at Antan, Odudu, Yoho, Qualboe, and other jetties at NIWA, Mclver, NNPC, ALSCON, Dozzy, Northwest.

 

The three(3) terminals of Calabar port are operated by the following terminal operators:

. ECM Terminal Limited

. INTEL Nigeria Limited

. Shoreline Logistics Nigeria Limited

 

4) Rivers Port Complex

This is one of the seaports in Nigeria that is strategically located in one of the world’s largest crude production regions in Rivers State.

 

The port is a multi-purpose port and plays the “Mother Port” role to several jetties surrounding her as “Satellites”. Rivers Port Complex has two(2) private terminal operators namely:

. Port and Terminal Operators Limited (PTOL)

. BUA Port and Terminal Nigeria Limited

 

5) Onne Port Complex

This is again one of the seaports in Nigeria situated in Rivers State. The port is one of the largest oil and gas free zone in the world supporting exploration and production for Nigeria activities.

 

The port has two(2) major facilities as follows:

. Federal Ocean Terminal

. Federal Lighter Terminal

 

6) Delta Port

Delta port is also one of the seaports in Nigeria and it is one of the three(3) major ports located in the Niger Delta axis within Delta State.

This port includes the ports of Warri, Sapele, Burutu, and the petroleum terminals of Escravos and Forcados. These ports are important because of the importance of oil in Nigeria.

 

Nigerian Ports Authority prioritizes continued greater synergy for operational efficiency at all the seaports in Nigeria to attract more investments.
